Perinatal & Postnatal Depression, PTSD and Parenthood
Giving birth and bringing a baby into this world can be a daunting and life changing experience for both new mothers and fathers. It is often visualized to be a time of great happiness, pleasure and excitement and as a new parent, you might not experience this straight away. However, the reality for many new parents can be far from this with feelings of stress, mood swings, sleep deprivation, exhaustion, anxiety, hopelessness, worry, low moods, wavering thoughts as well as relationship and financial difficulties.
When becoming a new parent, it can be really difficult to talk openly about how you’re feeling. There may be pressure for you to:
• be happy and excited
• be ten steps ahead of it all
• feel like the best parent if you’re struggling with your mental health
• hide away your emotions and worry that you may be judged and also that your baby may be taken away from you if you admit how you’re feeling
Seeking support will help to unfold the various difficulties that you may be experiencing and help you to gain self-awareness and deeper insight into your thoughts and feelings.
